The show will be at a new location, the home of Michael and Maria Cardillo located at 4401 St Elmo Ave.

This will be the fourth show for the group of women who are photographers, painters, printmakers, and collage artists. The fourteen women exhibiting in September include several new artists. Welcomed into this exhibit are Ellen Franklin, Valerie Gibson, Elizabeth Gray-Earl, Carrie Pendergrass, and Heidi Vasterling. These women will be showing paintings, photographs, and collage pieces contributing to the already wonderful quality of fine art that will be on display. Returning to exhibit her distinctively composed local industrial landscapes is photographer Maria Cardillo. Collage and painting artists Amber Cooley and Kristine Simpson each will display works created with collected papers and designed with distinction. Cat Collier continues to develop her jewel-like modern tree images that elegantly combine painting, collage and drawing. Katie Ward Knutson is focusing upon her Jefferson Heights neighborhood in watercolors paintings of local buildings as forms impacted by lighting conditions. Lauren Leutwiler’s current series of relief prints are each produced upon old book pages, meshing contemporary and historical printmaking. Sarah Nichols’ art involves her expert use of silkscreen technique in compositions based upon family, several in combination with tiny scale installations. Sarah’s perfectly crafted pieces engage in humor and exquisite use of color. Linda Thomas is emphasizing local wild birds in a series of drawings with watercolor, as always beautifully drawn with a sensitive eye and hand.

The Opening Reception is Friday September 12 from 6-9pm. Saturday September 13 hours are 11am-5pm. Sunday September 14 hours are 1-5pm. The artists will be available most of the weekend. She took on the brave task of joining us a week or so before her wedding to Mr. John Simpson. So in the midst of planning a wedding she is getting some collages ready for the Clothesline Art Show. She contacted me yesterday to say that among other business, she contracted a mean stomach bug that put her in the hospital! Let's go to God in prayer that Kristine will be 100% really soon and be able to return to John and the Clothesline group. We are excited to see her work join ours, whether she was able to produce everything she wanted to or not. Our Ladies of the Clothesline are above all else encouraging and supportive of our fellow artists in their joys and in their trials. We have celebrated new babies, new homes, new jobs, and future plans. We have been with each other as we said goodbye to loved ones, sending them home to Jesus. Can't wait to see what the future holds. Congrats Kristine on your upcoming marriage and we will pray with and for you that all ends will be tied up and that the Lord would heal you completely.

Poster

Artist Statements: Part 4

Linda Thomas
There is an elegant beauty in trivial objects and bits of nature and this is reflected in my work. I love the unpredictability of intaglio printmaking and I use different techniques to achieve textures and values. My subjects are often selected because they seem forgotten or simply evoke memories. I am intrigued by the Dutch still life paintings and I've begun to paint with oil on paper to visually explore tactile and light qualities without striving for photo-realism.

Kate Treick
Painting has been a wonderful creative outlet for me since my grandmother gave me my first set of oil paints when I was eleven. My work includes detailed mixed-media pieces that explore the play of light and shadow on flower petals and abstract acrylic paintings that explore color and texture. In both types of work I am inspired by light and color and in my flower paintings I celebrate the beauty of God's creation.

Kristine Zacharias
I am constantly absorbed in the act of looking, whether at something exquisite or mundane. Art is for me a way of combining these two while connecting with the people around me. Using found images and my own photographs, my collages and paintings illustrate a reality like that of memories-a combination of recollection, stories, memorabilia and photo albums-exploring the tension between history and myth, representation and abstraction, public and personal images and their collective meanings.

Artist Statements: Part Three

Lauren Leutwiler

I have painted two icons in the traditional manner in the past two years. I am amazed by the process and meaning of painting icons. Currently my artworks blend my desire to better understand icons with my desire to make prints. The richness of the mark-making and the strong graphic imagery of a carved and printed plate are wonderful. I love that the process of making a series of final artworks from one plate allows for many people to be able to afford an original piece of art.

Suzanne Moore

Color photography has embedded itself into my daily life, as I now see the world as I do through my viewfinder. Capturing a moment on paper is one thing, being in control of color using light in the darkroom is humbly exhilerating. I intentionally get lost driving in search to bring back my bizarre findings. I look to create a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. Being a painter initially, I use light on paper like paint on canvas, manipulating it until satisfied with the composition.

Diane Reed

My work is a response to the sights and circumstances I find in my life or as I travel halfway fascinating frameworks halfway around the world. Recently as I have been developing sketches from the "Palio" in Sienna, Italy and those from the Massai in Kenya, I am reminded of the contrasts of how we invest our lives, our precious moments given on the same God given sun.

Artist Statements: Part two

Lauren Cox
Through my work I wish to show the beauty of the body using traditional mediums. I don't want to make a forceful statement, but I do hope that my studies of the human body shown in its natural state has some effect.

Jennifer Kring
I strive to create compositions that provide a window into a story...a story of a life lived or a dream imagined. These works beckon the viewer to envision the possibilities of our own everyday as well as fantastic worlds we lived in as children. The process of creating this kind of enviroment requires the use of a variety of mediums, so I use what best suites the subject, which are then applied to canvas with beeswax.

Katie Ward Knutson
Light is one of the fundamental elements that make images attractive in art. I have loved experimenting with portraying light and how it interacts with our memory and senses. I love seeing how the camera captures light. In my Metro series, I have found photographs that capture the light as it dominates a dark, urban space and I replicate them with paint on canvas.

I have been really enjoying celebrating the little things in creation. Birds and rabbits are easily overlooked, or never seen. Through the eyes of my little children I have rediscovered these creatures and how lovely and special they are. The shapes of these animals lend themselves to study and experimentation. I have a very special place for sharing art with everyone, and being able to create tasteful and decorative pieces of art. I hope these small pieces can bring smiles to young and old, the new art patron and the seasoned collector

Artist Statements: Part One

Sarah Nichols
Which comes first in human experience, memory or imagination? And what is their relationship to each other? My work hypothesizes that memory and imagination are inextricable. Imagination is the often unpredictable appropriation of memory that recycles our catalogue of experience into new ideas. Memory is at once both a conscious and subconscious faculty that coerces the waking perspective and biases the senses. It is by calculation, quantization, and categorization that the reasoning mind counters. This internal power struggle accounts for some of the most significant relationships in my work; nature versus technology, the mundane verses the extraordinary, the temporal versus the eternal.

Cat Collier

For the last year my focus has been on creating trees. My techniques have remained the same over the year with the exception of incorporating wood grain contact paper into my collage. I really like the cross section of the wood grain instead of painting or collaging the part of the tree. It is a contrast between real and abstract graffiti inspired line quality. Bright colors versus the brown shades of wood trees simply represents life, a forest of trees growing, rising up as a family of trees, strong and full of hope, my family tree.

Final Show Card

Now ALL the names are on it, so sorry swooz n lauren! type='text'>The Artwork Cometh

Tomorrow I am the joyful recipient of artwork from at least 13 ladies for Clothesline Art Show entries. I am kinda anxious to see how this goes. Put enough women in a room and you get drama. And enough creative women with passions, emotions, and (let's admit it) agendas, you get some unexpected things. I am praying that we can break out of our comfortable places and create new facets of our relationships in order to grow artistically and spiritually. Cat has worked very hard to be the administrator. Not everything is going to be perfect and there are goals that are going to be achieved and some that will not. Each time we have this show we get closer to being a bit more professional, but as Joel told me last night the main goal is to have great art hanging on the walls and to have people show up. The rules for rules sake is not always the goal.

But all in all I am excited because this is a new experience for me, being a juror, hostess, and coordinator of sorts. There are lots of things rattling around in my brain about this event and I'm afraid of how ill prepared people will feel I am. I want to have more compassion, more humility, more respect for those women in this group who have encouraged me to be an artist. Those I have watched from afar and been eager to see what they can do. Seems like so many in my 'hood are buzzing about the "ARTS" like its a nation, a political party, a secret club, a golden ticket what-have-you. We women of the Clothesline are working for this buzz, because it's been alive in us for so long. It's not sparked by whatever big-money foundation is handing out grants it's sparked by Jesus, the one who put this desire in all of us. It won't just go away. But without loving, faith-driven, fellow artists we will be alone with our fragile egos. I want to see all of us get better, not just with art production but with a sense of urgency to create for the Kingdom of God. That means we have to know how to market it, we have to know how to price it, we have to know how to make deadlines, we have to have a current blasted artist statement! It's not about being blown back and forth by a creative breeze (although there must be an important time for that), it's about fine tuning ourselves to be useful tools for Jesus.

So I welcome you artist/tools for the Kingdom to my house. They'll be a sign out front, or balloons or something. I'll be waitin'
You can contact us here

Information for Our Ladies of the Clothesline

For those of you applying and dropping off work for The Clothesline Art Show I welcome you to my home. I can't wait to rearrange furniture, take down my paintings and decorations and put up the work that is being juried. When I offered to have my home as the drop off point I thought it at merely practical, but now I am excited thinking of hosting our jury and also transforming my home into a place where fresh art from new and old artists comes to rest. Temporarily. Until the Sessions House and Laura Pettit welcome you in May.

I think of the process that I have used over the years to get myself "out there". I make the most of my gifts and my stage of life without having them bump heads too often. The internet is an amazing thing that can become a great tool for those of us who are moms with little kids. I can work on my correspondence, my website, my web shop, my photographs, my advertising all in the comfort of my living room. I can put out little kiddie "fires" while doing this as well. I know those of us involved with the Clothesline Art Show are all in different stages of life, career, and knowledge of the internet that's why I wanted to post some basic tools that have made my career as an artist possible and profitable while holding true to my beliefs as a stay-at-home mom. Be wise and productive! And with that, let's get to the resources.

Business Cards
For this Clothesline Art Show we are requiring each artist to have contact information in the form of business cards. This makes each art patron able to access your personal info without searching for a pen and paper. It also helps your fellow artists know what to give an interested customer when the artist at hand is unavailable. The companies I have used with great success are Vistaprint and Moo. Vistaprint has a great deal where you can get 250 free business cards all you pay is the shipping and you can choose from various designs that range from basic to kinda funky. Shipping is around $6 if you are willing to wait a few weeks, expedited shipping is more expensive. Moo is a company from the UK that has high quality products that are sure to get you noticed. I have started using Moo cards as my business cards and they show off your work with their fine color imaging and neato size. These cards are not the cheapest, but they are worth it. Plan on giving yourself a couple weeks for these to be delivered they come from the UK in a cool little box. It costs $25 for 100 cards. If you get these for the Clothesline Art Show plan to be almost out of them before the shows end.

Pictures
Having pictures of your work well photographed and online gets you almost instant advertising with little effort. There are many ways to upload and share your photos. I have not tried them all. Editing software completely aside I will always recommend flickr. You start an account, describe yourself as much as you want, add a picture of yourself (or your work) and upload pictures. You can now edit your pictures on flickr and add effects. You can title every picture, add 'tags' to your picture (these help people typing in searches to possibly land on your photos), put your photos into groups (like Kreativ Network, Chattanooga TN, Artwork on Paper or Bunny Lovers Unite!), comment on other peoples photos, and have 'contacts' you wish to visit often to see their photos. Flickr also has TONS of perks. You can load your photos from your flickr account directly to Moo and many other applications that make your experience with printing your artwork very versatile and affordable. It's a HUGE resource and a mondo time-sucker. I have started a Clothesline Art Show flickr group. If you have photos of the show you want to add do it today!

Web Shops and Websites
Again, there are millions of ways to have websites. When I decided to start mine I just Googled a do-it-yourself sort of website and that's what I have kept for about 2 years now. I don't know that much about designing a website that's why I paid for a system that had templates to plug my info into. I went to Web.com. I pay $20 a month and then I have to pay a domain name fee. You can pay annually or up to 5 years I think. The annual fee is around $120 bucks. If someone can get me a better deal on any of this I'll gladly hand over the reigns. For me it was about immediacy. I could not wait another day to have a website. It's easier than trying to hand out your weblog address to every body. Having an actual website is not necessary. You can thrive quite nicely with a blog and a webshop.

Speaking of web shops! Another site that is just something to fall in love with and waste much time and fundage on is Etsy. Etsy is a site that sets up free web shops for anyone as long as the products you sell meet certain criteria. They must be handmade. Etsy is here for those of us that make things. It's for everything handmade! They also sell quality vintage items and stuff-making supplies. It is like Ebay in the fact that you pay to list each item and you pay a final value fee. The fees are much lower than Ebay charges however. You set up an account, add info about yourself, add items, 'tag' those items so they will be found in customers searches, add the materials you use, upload photos of your item, list prices and shipping. You can add a fancy banner to the top of your shops page. You can search for items and add them into your favorites. You can go to forums and ask questions or go to chat rooms and make 'friends'. You can search for other Chattanooga local artisans! I think we need to start a Clothesline Art Show Team! Again, it has endless possibilities. You can make transactions as simple as you want them to be. Your sales will be sent to you in your regular email inbox, no worries, you won't miss anything! It has been completely worth it to have an Etsy shop. Put it on your business card, the shop address is simple and easy to remember. Customers on Etsy are looking for a certain price range I've found. I don't put much on there I wouldn't be that jazzed to ship. The priciest thing I've sold has been $300. It costs 20 cents for each listing. Listings do expire, I think you have 3 months.

Keeping up with Blogs
I'm not going to go into web logs because I know that most everyone knows what they are and what to do with them. Sometimes it's easier to not have a blog and have a MySpace account or (and I prefer) a Facebook account. Having these simple accounts makes finding you easier for people who want to keep in touch. I load pictures of artwork and upcoming shows onto both MySpace and Facebook. Folks that I never email and never would be able to find my blog can easily find me and respond to the event I've listed or the pictures I've posted. That again is about how much time you want to invest online.
I want to recommend setting up a Google account so you can suscribe to all the blogs you read (or skim). Google has a function called Google Reader. It organizes blogs by their addresses and keeps a list of the most recent posts. As soon as you click on that recent post it vanishes from your reader so it's not cluttered. It saves so much time because you're only looking at things that are updated. There are some blogs that update constantly on my reader like Whip Up, Decor8, Portrait Party, and the Artful Parent. These blogs are great resources and it’s great to check them out when convenient knowing that all the recent posts are collected. But for my everyday I just can check to see what my friends have written. There are many inspiring sites out there and with the Google Reader you can keep them organized without wasting precious art making time.

There are so many other things that I could go onto list, but this is just a start. I hope that These resources help our Clothesline members become more recognized without beating the street too hard to get noticed.

I can’t wait to see your guys as you drop off work! You can always contact me with any questions you have about the information above and we will add more to it I’m sure as technology takes off way ahead of us. Blessings!
Katie

Seven Days In Counting

Hello Everyone! We would like to welcome you all back to the Clothesline Art Show blog. After our show in September we blogged and updated and met and now we have sent out invitations to artists to have them apply. We hope if you have expressed interest in participating that you got an invitation. And we look forward to getting your application on March 1st and then finally seeing what you created on March 7th.

We are terribly excited about Clotheslines upcoming show, May 9, 10, and 11. Our relationships are really important and the relationship we have with you is just as important. If you are a newcomer who received your application and are seriously wondering if all of this is a good idea or you are unsure about your ability, or the form of art you create, please know that is how we all feel. We are all women who have jobs, families, children, husbands, lives that fill our time in wonderful, exciting ways but, we are committed to making art. We also all have to come up with three artworks to be juried. We decided to put everyone on the same playing field and we hope it works. We believe this process takes courage and grace and we hope if you have questions or concerns that you can feel free to let us know. We never want to exclude your ideas or thoughts and it is important that you create art and are filled with the power that it gives you through God.

That power may seem obscure to you as you comfort your children, or wait tables or eat in chaos with your family, or rush to get to work everyday on time. We would like to encourage and lift you up at this time, as you decide to fill out your application and "bust out" three new pieces of art. You may not even feel God or know God in your art and we have talked a lot about why we incorporate God into Our Clothesline Art Show. We feel like God lives in our hearts and He will drive us to do this "art show thing" when we never thought we could. We believe because of our previous experiences that God blesses us as we create and show our art.

Please do not let fear get in your way as you make the decision to apply. We are not a clique of women who get together and gossip or compete with one another, we simply are passionate about making art. Is it not a true delight? To create and share your creations.

You might be concerned about how we will jury your work. We would like to assure you that our process in new but one we think will work. We decided to use a "decision tree" process that will give the jurers a way to decipher between those who have shown previously and those who have not. It will include a series of questions that allow for the variety, quality and depth or growth of art created. We have invited 25 artists but only 15 will be chosen to show. If you are a student or someone who has not previously shown before we really want to see what you have been creating. There is no excuse for any of us to let this opportunity to go by without trying and we are open to you, if you think you can do it. Which we think you can!

If you have questions please email us at ourclothesline@gmail.com. And remember applications are due March 1st. We need to get a count on how many artists will be dropping off their art and so timeliness is important, it will help you as well. Thank you.

Good Bye & Happy Art Making!

Card Template

This is for our ladies of the Clothesline. I think we have all finally recovered from our September 2008 Clothesline event. Our Clothesline Art Show was absolutely a huge success and we owe our families, friends and patrons a hearty THANK YOU! I was personally amazed at the "turn-out" as well as the incredible support of all involved. We the artists and the organizers have now been able to step back from a year with two events and see ourselves having been challenged, meeting the challenge, learning, growing and refining Our Clothesline Purpose and Standards.

I do not think any one of us ever thought we'd be facing a huge interest and need for an event like Our Clothesline in Chattanooga. It is a pleasure as well as humbling to be faced with the blessings of success and we strive to face the future with integrity and purpose driven focus as we share our gifts and talents with one another and the community.

Between May and September we saw the need for organization. I decided to volunteer my time and take on the responsibility of organizing the event. I have learned a great deal about what my responsibilities entail and will require of me in the future. One of the first arising concerns is that of fellow female artists interested in participation in Our Clothesline. I have been contacted by several artist expressing their interest in Our Clothesline. My response has been this:

Thank you so much! We are also terribly excited about the Our Clothesline! Our May 2007 show was incredible and our September show was an even better success! Our September art show was our second Clothesline event and we have learned a whole lot and have began defining our Purpose and Standards.

Our Clothesline is a grassroots effort that at it's foundation began 15 years ago. The Clothesline is a unique group of women of all ages, all walks of life and art. We do love the challenge of creating new work for each new show and we love your interest. Unfortunately at this time the group is closed to newcomers. We are excited about the high level of interest but Artist Participation is by invite only at this time. At the core of our group is our Christian values and that is something we strive to refine and uphold. We will be inviting 15 Artists for our May 2008 event, three of which will be Fine Craft Artists. We understand that our event walks the line between a fine art event and a craft show or festival atmosphere. We would love to expand our horizons but feel it necessary to walk slowly through this process, for the integrity of Our Clothesline. We will not be accepting Jewelry or Accessory Artists, American Folk Artists, or Outsider Artists. We do sincerely appreciate your interest and support and will keep you informed as Our Clothesline grows and changes.

I believe this will be helpful for artists in the future. Although, if you came to our show and spoke with myself, another participating artist, or signed the guest book and expressed interest you will be contacted and invited to apply to be in our May 2008 art show. The invitations are to go out before Christmas and are only applications for approval. After our September show we will be requiring more from each applying artist and those guidelines will be included in the invitation/application. We hate that we have to turn artists away, but feel exclusion at this junction is necessary. We appreciate the overwhelming interest and hope that we do not turn people away from their personal hopes, dreams, or goals as female artists. We sincerely believe that our God given gifts and talents are responsibilities, just as a person of wealth is responsible for serving, sharing or giving of their wealth. We too feel it is our responsibility to serve our community in an artistic, creative way.

If you have questions, concerns or suggestions please contact us at:

ourclothesline@gmail.com

Thank you and stay tuned! I just think that people need to see art living with people...they need to be in a comfortable place... a place where conversation isn't stifled and they can meet artists and be themselves.Perhaps the gallery scene is just not always the right fit for every artist...or every viewer, for that matter. I know that the older I become the more weary I become of going through those motions. And perhaps I should take note b/c my sales this weekend were grrreat! Thank you everyone for coming out and supporting us!"

if you'd like to continue this conversation or have any questions, items of concern or would actually like to see a specific artist work please feel free to leave a comment or write us @ ourclothesline@gmail[dot]com. we are really excited about the future of ourclothesline. we have a possible fall/winter show and we'd like your feedback. we will of course keep you updated on the artists and their works in progress or you can find them at their own websites via the sidebar. thank you so much.

Tomorrow, this is it!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_6puL3IjuY6c/RkypqVgyYZI/AAAAAAAAABU/dTVZVunSPWU/s400/clothesline_sign.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065610225679229330" />
CLOTHESLINE SHOW: WOMEN’S ART
May 18 & 19
Friday 11-7 and Saturday 11-4
Featuring several of Chattanooga’s premier up and coming women artists Come meet the artists and see their most recent works at the home of Laura Pettit at 113 Ochs Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37409.

A collective of some of Chattanooga’s most intriguing women artists will display fine artworks for public viewing on May 18th and 19th at the home of Laura Pettit at the foot of Look out Mountain. The event will showcase a variety of different mediums and styles to fit an assortment of varied tastes. The art aficionado will have the opportunity to enjoy everything from abstract expressions to photography to finely detailed figurative painting to illustration-style images.

The format of a clothesline art show traditionally offers fine quality art in simple presentation mats rather than full frames. This permits artists to sell their works at affordable prices and the buyers to frame the artwork in any manner they prefer. The first things I saw of hers were pieces she did in college and the first thing I thought was, "Oh, boy, she's gonns give me a run for my money!" Kelly's work is so whimsical, peacful, poetic and captures pieces of life that are universal and uniquely Kelly's. She works with pen and ink, black and white and with color. Her most recent work is polished and methodical with free thoughts inter-twined. Her family bonds must effect her work so much because the celebration of children, relationships, literary imagery are all there. Kelly is newly married and a new mama, I can't wait to see what she creates in lew of her huge life changes.
In addition, the participating women artists in our group appreciated the irony of the historic association of women, housework, laundry and using a clothesline contrasting with their role of women who make art to display in a clothesline format art exhibit. These women are employed, some are wives, some are mothers all are busy people. Yet their passion is to make their art. This passion is the seed of Laura Pettit’s vision to organize and host this inaugural art event. She wants to provide a venue for viewing and selling the art of a wonderful variety of woman art ists in our community other than in a gallery setting.
The artists are Linda Thomas, Lauren Leutwiler, Maria Cardillo, Laura Pettit, Diane Reed, Cathy Collier, Katie Ward Knutson, Jen Kring, Kelly Ann Wilkes and Mary Ferris.
Don’t miss this opportunity to chat with the artists or add to your own art collection. The exhibit will be open for viewing Friday, May 18th, from 11-7 and Saturday, May 19th, 11-4 at the Victorian home of Laura Pettit, 113 Ochs Highway, Chattanooga, TN 37409. Hors d’oeuvres will be served.
questions email Laura at bluesailstravel@gmail.com

Contradictions & Collaborations

I went and saw two of my professors from Chattanooga State in an art show last night. It was called Contradictions and Collaborations. Mike Holsomback's style pretty much defined how I started to paint and it is eery how our styles continue to be the same. I talked to Mike about what he used for his most recent work. I was curious about the spray paint. And in typical Mike style he said, "It's the special kind of spray paint I get at Lowe's." Also he made sure that the oil based spray paint went with the oil paint and the waterbased went on the waterbased paint. Wisdom. This is an excellent show. Ken Paige's work is amazing with all the masking he did for some crisp tight edges. My husband didn't believe me when I told him Ken taped off everything, but I swear, there are some seriously complicated cuts. They received money from Allied Arts for this show, and the work is wonderfully collaborative. Check it out at The Gallery in Red Bank. am also reminded of another teacher of mine, Lauren Leutwiler who is doing alot of dogs lately. Mike always paints his black and white dog, and Lauren's style of painting pooches is very similar.
